Back in Thailand there was a boy who was known to be very very lazy.
In fact the boy was so lazy, he couldn’t even raise the muscles on his cheek to spare a smile to the Gods when they walked by.
One day as the boy was lying under his usual tree spot chewing on his sun flower seeds.
A bunch of city folks ran by shouting,”The Gods are giving out free Gold at the waterfall, we will all be rich!”
The Lazy boy thought that the villagers were going crazy,
but as the crowd grew bigger and bigger the boy began to believe the villagers and thought,
“OMG!! Maybe I should go to the waterfall. That way I can grab as much gold as I can, bring it home, and help my parents pay off their morgage debt.”
The idea was amazing, but because the boy was very very lazy all these negative thoughts popped in his mind one after another.
“Wait, the waterfall is too far.”
“It’s going to be wayyyyy to heavy to carry.”
“Gee… with the amount of people in town. I will never get there in time to get my share.”
So before the boy even attempted to try, He had already given up.
As the sun was setting, the villagers were already walking back into town with bags and pouches full of Gold.
Some had barrels, some had crates, and some had so many that they’d be rich for generations after generations.
The boy took one breath and said, ”Oh Well.”
The next day, sitting in his usual spot. The boy noticed there was another group of excited villagers shouting, “They’re doing it again!!! Let’s Go and get that gold!”
This time jumping up with excitement, the boy was fully aware of the message and thought to himself,
“OH MY GOD! This time I am definitely going!”
While packing up his sun flower seeds, two thoughts jumped into his mind
“but how on Earth will I carry the gold?”
“How will I bring it back?”
Frustrated, the boy sat back down and thought about it very very hard.
Not aware of the time, the boy noticed that the villagers were already heading back into town with piles full of gold.
Some had rice bags, some had their elephants, and crazy enough? some EVEN placed it in their spatoon.
However, the lazy boy didn’t care.
Thinking that he can out smart the Gods and the villagers. The lazy boy thought to himself,
“Eh, it’s okay. Knowing the Gods they will probably give out more tomorrow.”
So the boy set out a plan.
“Tomorrow, I will wake up very early and be the first to head out to the waterfall. On my way I will catch myself a wild elephant and tame it to obey me. When I get to the waterfall, I will knit myself a bunch of banana leaf baskets that will help me carry as many gold as I want to, and with the Elephant I will carry my share back home to pay off my families debt and live happly ever after, yup.”
The plan seems very well organized so the boy was set to sleep.
Early the next day, before the roosters even crowed and before the sun has even made its’ first connection to the horizon, the boy did what he said he was going to do and set off on his journey.
On his journey to the waterfall he found himself a very strong elephant that he successfully tamed to listen to his many commands.
Passing Meh Khong River the boy found himself some banana leaves and knit himself ten very strong and huge baskets.
Exhausted from all the hard work the boy continued his journey. When the boy came to the waterfall. He smirked and shouted,
“Whose Bad? I’m bad. Not only was a able to tame a wild elephant, and knit myself some sturdy baskets? I am the first one here!”
Excited, the boy looked around. Found a tree and sat under the shades.
The boy sat there and waited.
Time passed and the boy still continued to wait.
The sun had already touch the mid sky and still there were no sign of the Gods.
Frustrated - The boy yelled, “Where the hell are the Gods and my gold!?!”
The Lazy boy paced back and forth so fast it was probably the most foot step he has ever taken.
Infuriated with the Gods, the boy took out his anger by punching and bruising the tree he sat under
The boy continued to curse and shout at the Gods.
Startled by a masculen voice, the boy listened.
It was the voice of Ong Pra` Keo. The Green buddha.
Ong Pra` Keo said,
“because you are so lazy, I leave your hands bruised to remind you that life has its challenge.”
“because you are so lazy, I leave you these banana baskets that you knit, just so you can use it to place the fishes and fruit you must fetch in order to survive.”
“because you are so lazy, you will have only this elephant to work for you, BUT he will not work alone - for you must work together till the day you die.”
“Lastly, because you are so lazy - I leave you with no wealth but morals and knowledge to help you find them on your own.”
THE END.
N.Thamdy… Lol, a folklore that madre once taught me when I use to go with her early in the morning to Swap Meet. I Love her :)
